Report:
SK Victoria Wanderers registered a handsome
victory over neighbours Oratory Youths so that they are now sharing
the second place on the table with Xewkija Tigers. The two teams
are one point from leaders St Lawrence Spurs. The victory for the
Wanderers matured with a fine performance during the first period.
They managed to resist Oratory’s initiative and operated fast
breaks which resulted in a three goal lead by the end of the first
half.
Oratory were unlucky in the 8th minute of play when an effort by
Ishaku Umoru following a free kick by George Louis Zammit hit the
post. The Wanderers opened the score in the 13th minute when the
referee awarded a penalty for a challenge between Oratory’s
George Louis Zammit and Ajibade Adesina. Udo Monday converted from
the spot kick.
The Youths lost concentration and four minutes later they suffered
the second goal. Chris Sciortino released Ajibade Adesina in a fast
break and the latter placed in goal from close distance. Oratory
replied with a free kick by Marvin Grech that ended just high and
in the 23rd minute Victoria’s goalie Marlon Mercieca saved
an attempt by Ejefor Nkwocha. Victoria’s goalkeeper was agin
called to make good saves following efforts by Stephen Orlando and
Alex Sacco. However, the Youths were punished for the missed chances
as the Wanderers increased their lead in the 39th minute. It was
Ige Adesina who entered through Oratory’s rearguard in a counter
attack, unmarked Joseph Vella and the latter placed easily in goal
with a low shot.
After the re-start the Wanderers controlled play and created more
danger than their opponents. In the 52nd minute an effort by Ajibade
Adesina hit the woodwork. Oratory were as much unlucky minutes later
when a header by George Louis Zammmit from a free kick by Alex Sacco
hit the woodwork. Victoria went again close to scoring through Joseph
Vella and Ahjibade Adesina while Michael Tabone was the fourth player
who saw his shot hitting the woodwork. In the 74th minute Oratory
reduced the arrears through a penalty kick, awarded for hands by
Michael Tabone, converted by Ishaku Umoru. However, the Wanderers
sealed the issue with two goals by Ige Adesina in the final minutes.
The score became 4-1 in the 78th minute when the Nigerian striker
concluded a fine move by Ajibade Adesina, and in the 81st minute
Ige Adesina made it 5-1 by placing the ball in goal following a
personal action.
