Report:
Zebbug Rovers ended their first round with
a fine victory over bottom placed Oratory Youths. This was the second
victory for the Rovers and with the three points obtained they wove
to a mid-table position. With this result Oratory remained without
a victory after the first round.
The Youths went close to score an early goal but a free kick by
Alex Sacco ended just over the crossbar. Zebbug replied with an
effort by Joseph Cordina which was well saved by goalie Kelly Grima.
In the 10th minute the same goalkeeper cleared danger before Basil
Chibueze could conclude and in the 22nd minute the Rovers opened
the score. It was Chibueze who released Manwel Cordina in the area
and the latter placed easily in goal from close distance. Minutes
later Oratory’s goalie Grima blocked an effort by substitute
Philip Cardona. The same Cardona doubled the score in the second
minute of stoppage time of the first period when he entered the
area with a solo action and placed behind goalie Grima with a low
shot.
After the break the Youths produced a good reaction and went close
to re-open the issue with shots by Stephen Theuma and George Louis
Zammit. In the 56th minute Zebbug replied with a shot by Philip
Cardona who concluded badly from an ideal position and minutes later
a shot by Joseph Cordina was deflected in corner with the goalkeeper
beaten. In the 67th minute the Youths lost a golden scoring opportunity
when Andrew Zammit entered the area but had his low shot blocked
by goalie Darren Pace. However, Andrew Zammit managed to reduce
the arrears in the 77th minute when he guided the ball into an empty
goal following a header by George Louis Zammit from a cross by Ishaku
Umoru. Oratory went all out to recover the deficit and a shot by
Stephen Orlando ended just wide. The Rovers sealed the issue with
a goal by Franco Magrin in the 85th minute following a corner action.
Zebbug’s goalie Darren Pace denied Oratory from scoring a
second goal in the 90th minute when he turned in corner a shot by
Ishaku Umoru.
